In Search of the King of Flat Whites: Mark Gold
Saturday mornings are the perfect time to check out some new spots in Durban. Especially this time of year when the sun is starting to rise earlier and the city seems to be anticipating summers arrival. Waking up early is not a strong point of mine, so when I get an invitation to early breakfast there generally has to be a good incentive…e.g. I don’t have any Nespresso capsules left or the milk is sour.
This last Saturday morning a friend asked me to join her for breakfast / coffee and after checking the time and agreeing to meet we headed off to our selected spot. Unfortunately when we go there we were directed to the spot next door as they were full. We ended up getting a table at Mark Gold, a place I’d heard a lot about and had been wanting to try for a few years now.
Mark Gold is better known as a brilliant local Jeweller however over the years they’ve become known just as much for the great lunches and breakfasts they serve.
Sitting down we were helped by a friendly young man who asked to take our drinks orders. I naturally thought that this was a good time to see how they measured up on the flat white experience. Straight away I asked if they serve flat whites and the answer immediately was yes they do. So I placed my order and sat back to peruse the menu for breakfast items.
As I was glancing through the menu I noticed their coffee selections and what do you know? Not only is the Flat White listed on the menu but they include the option for a single or double. Instantly I am expecting a great experience because they seem to know what a Flat White is.
And I was not disappointed. I had ordered a single flat white and what arrived was exactly that. Just enough froth, perfectly strong and sweet and I will definitely be ordering a flat white from Mark Gold again. Maybe I will order something shiny and sparkly to go with it next time…
PS: Try the Cappuccino too…
