This weekend to escape the noisy neighbours and kids as well as the obnoxious neighbour flying his drone over my apartment without permission, I dragged a friend along to Café Jiran to have a cup of coffee.
Café Jiran is one of the best places to get coffee in Durban. Wonderful views and service and it’s the perfect place to people watch as it’s next door to a hotel with lots of people from all different walks of life walking in and out. Read the rest of this entry
My Gran was a remarkable woman, someone who filled my life with love, acceptance, grace and friendship.
My memories are filled with images of her, mostly covered in cake batter, knitting needles in hand or sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and some tast…y treat she’d cooked up that day.
One of my favourite memories was watching Dumb & Dumber with her one night. I was a bit worried at first that it might not be her kind of movie but she giggled at all the right places and laughed about it for days!
She was never too busy and made time to sit and listen when I got home from a horrid day at school (and there were many!) and would somehow be able to make it all seem ok just by a few apt words of advice and wisdom…and a piece of cake or two…(no wonder I have such a sweet tooth!!) So I was thinking today and maybe I’m just having a moment here, that there have been so many moments in my life that I’ve been blessed by people way less fortunate than me. I sometimes forget how blessed I am when I look at my circumstances and forget that there are those way worse off in many ways.
With the current economy it has been brought home to me personally how fragile our comfort zones are and how fiercly we fight to protect them. We trust in our jobs or bank accounts for our security.
So I was reminded this morning of a few instances in my life where I’ve encountered people who saw a bigger picture and were able to love, laugh, share kindness and hope despite their circumstances and were even able to forgive those who were the source of those circumstances.
